  Maximos the Confessor

  Venerable, Μάξιμος

  St. Maximos the Confessor was a monk and theologian of the seventh century. Leaving high office in Constantinople for the monastic life, he became the great defender of the true faith against monothelitism, teaching that Christ, being true God and true man, possesses both a divine and a human will. For refusing to keep silence he was tried, mutilated, and exiled, dying in banishment in 662.

• Eudokia the Empress

  Holy Woman, Ευδοκία η Βασίλισσα

  Saint Eudokia was born Athenais, daughter of an Athenian philosopher, and after her baptism married the Emperor Theodosius II. A woman of learning and piety, she composed verse on Scripture and built churches and hospices in Jerusalem.

• Dorotheos of Gaza

  Venerable, Δωρόθεος Γάζης

  Saint Dorotheos was a monk of the monastery of Abba Seridos near Gaza in the sixth century and a disciple of the great elders Barsanuphios and John. He later founded his own monastery and wrote instructions on the spiritual life that remain among the most read works of Orthodox monasticism.

• Dositheos of Gaza

  Venerable, Δοσίθεος

  Saint Dositheos was a young man of noble family who entered the monastery near Gaza under the care of Saint Dorotheos. Though weak in body and unable to keep the ascetic rule, he attained holiness in a few years through perfect obedience and the cutting off of his own will.

• Irene the Empress (Xene)

  Saint Irene was a Hungarian princess who married the Emperor John II Komnenos. She was known for her charity and founded the great Monastery of Christ Pantokrator in Constantinople with its hospital for the poor.

• Tikhon of Zadonsk

  Hierarch, Τύχων Ζαντόνσκ

  Saint Tikhon was Bishop of Voronezh in the eighteenth century and, after retiring for reasons of health, lived at the Zadonsk monastery. There he wrote spiritual works, received visitors of every rank and gave generously to the poor.
