Irene the Empress (Xene)

Righteous Irene the Empress, wife of John II Komnenos, the nun Xene.

Saint Irene was a Hungarian princess who married the Emperor John II Komnenos. She was known for her charity and founded the great Monastery of Christ Pantokrator in Constantinople with its hospital for the poor.

Before her death in the twelfth century she received the monastic habit under the name Xene.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Irene the Empress (Xene) is commemorated on August 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 26 of the civil calendar.
