Eudokia the Empress

Righteous Eudokia, Empress, wife of Theodosius the Younger.

Saint Eudokia was born Athenais, daughter of an Athenian philosopher, and after her baptism married the Emperor Theodosius II. A woman of learning and piety, she composed verse on Scripture and built churches and hospices in Jerusalem.

She spent her last years in the Holy City and reposed there in the fifth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Eudokia the Empress is commemorated on August 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 26 of the civil calendar.
