Founders of Iviron: John, Euthymios, George and Gabriel

Venerable John, Euthymios, George and Gabriel the Iberians, founders and fathers of the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos.

John, a Georgian nobleman, and his son Euthymios came to Mount Athos in the tenth century and, with the support of Saint Athanasios of the Lavra, founded the Monastery of the Iberians. Euthymios translated the Scriptures and Fathers into Georgian, and George the Hagiorite later continued the work as abbot.

The monk Gabriel is remembered for receiving the icon of the Panagia Portaitissa from the sea. The four are honored together on May 13.

On the New Calendar, Founders of Iviron: John, Euthymios, George and Gabriel is commemorated on May 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 26 of the civil calendar.
