Monastic Martyrs of Iviron

Holy Monastic Martyrs of the Iviron Monastery, drowned for refusing the Latin union.

In the late thirteenth century, when the Emperor Michael VIII sought to impose the union with Rome, the monks of Iviron on Mount Athos refused to accept it. Tradition relates that the elder monks were put aboard a ship and drowned in the sea, while the younger were carried off into captivity.

They are honored among the Athonite martyrs for Orthodoxy.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Monastic Martyrs of Iviron is commemorated on May 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 26 of the civil calendar.
