Venerable Irene, abbess of Chrysovalantou, wonderworker.
St. Irene was a noblewoman of Cappadocia in the ninth century who, on her way to Constantinople to be considered as bride of the emperor, chose instead the monastic life at the convent of Chrysovalantou. She became abbess and was renowned for asceticism, discernment and miracles.
Tradition relates that a sailor brought her three apples from Paradise, and her blessed apples are still given to the faithful. She reposed in peace at a great age and is deeply loved throughout the Greek world.

On the New Calendar, Irene Chrysovalantou is commemorated on July 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 10 of the civil calendar.
