John of Kathares

Venerable John the Confessor, abbot of the Monastery of Kathares, who suffered for the icons.

John was abbot of the Monastery of Kathares in Bithynia in the ninth century. When the iconoclast emperors renewed their persecution he refused to renounce the holy icons and was imprisoned, scourged and exiled.

He endured many years of hardship and reposed in peace, honoured as a confessor.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John of Kathares is commemorated on April 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 10 of the civil calendar.
