New Martyr Mark of Crete, beheaded at Smyrna.
Mark was a Cretan who had denied Christ in his youth and lived as a Muslim in Smyrna. Stricken with remorse, he confessed his return to Christ before the judge and refused every inducement to recant.
He was beheaded in Smyrna in 1643.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Mark of Crete is commemorated on May 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 27 of the civil calendar.
