Nektarios and Theophanes of Meteora

Venerable Nektarios and Theophanes the Apsarades, brothers and founders of the Varlaam Monastery at Meteora.

Nektarios and Theophanes were brothers from Ioannina who became monks and, in the sixteenth century, climbed the rock of the earlier hermit Varlaam at Meteora. There they built the Monastery of All Saints, known as Varlaam, and gathered a brotherhood.

They reposed in the 1540s and are honored as founders of one of the great monasteries of Meteora.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Nektarios and Theophanes of Meteora is commemorated on May 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 30 of the civil calendar.
