Venerable Nicholas the Confessor, Abbot of the Studion Monastery.
St. Nicholas was born in Crete and as a boy was sent to Constantinople, where he entered the Monastery of Studion under St. Theodore the Studite. He shared in the sufferings of his abbot during the iconoclast persecution, enduring imprisonment and exile.
After the restoration of the icons he became abbot of Studion, and reposed in peace in the ninth century.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Nicholas the Studite is commemorated on February 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 17 of the civil calendar.
