Plato of Studion

Venerable Plato, abbot of Sakkoudion and uncle of Saint Theodore the Studite, confessor for the icons.

Plato was born in Constantinople in the eighth century, orphaned young, and became a monk on Mount Olympus in Bithynia. He founded the Monastery of Sakkoudion and later guided his nephew Theodore, who became the great abbot of the Studion.

He suffered imprisonment and exile both for the holy icons and for opposing the unlawful marriage of the emperor. He reposed in the early ninth century at the Studion, honoured as a confessor.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Plato of Studion is commemorated on April 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 17 of the civil calendar.
