Theonas of Thessalonica

Saint Theonas, Archbishop of Thessalonica and founder of the Monastery of Saint Anastasia.

Theonas lived on Mount Athos in the sixteenth century as a disciple of Saint James of Kastoria, and after his teacher's martyrdom founded the Monastery of Saint Anastasia Pharmakolytria near Thessalonica.

He was later chosen Archbishop of Thessalonica, where he shepherded his flock under Ottoman rule and reposed in peace. His incorrupt relics are kept in his monastery.

On the New Calendar, Theonas of Thessalonica is commemorated on April 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 17 of the civil calendar.
