  Basil of Parion

  Hierarch, Βασίλειος

  St. Basil was Bishop of Parion in Asia Minor during the age of iconoclasm. Refusing to consent to the condemnation of the holy icons, he was driven from his see and spent long years in hardship and wandering, enduring persecution rather than betray the fullness of the faith.

• Anthusa of Constantinople

  Holy Woman, Ανθούσα

  Anthusa was the daughter of the iconoclast emperor Constantine V and twin sister of the future emperor Leo. Unlike her father she loved the holy icons and refused every proposal of marriage, giving her wealth to the poor.

• Artemon of Laodicea

  Hierarch, Αρτέμων ο Ιερομάρτυς

  Artemon served the Church of Laodicea in Syria first as reader and then as deacon and presbyter for many years. In the persecution of Diocletian he was arrested and, tradition relates, worked wonders that led many to faith.

• Akakios of Kavsokalyvia

  Venerable, Ακάκιος ο Καυσοκαλυβίτης

  Akakios was born in the Agrapha mountains in the seventeenth century and became a monk on Mount Athos, settling finally in the cave of Saint Maximus at Kavsokalyvia. There he lived in extreme asceticism and was granted gifts of prayer and foresight.

  Martyr, Μηνάς, Δαβίδ και Ιωάννης

  Menas, David and John were monks of Palestine who were seized by Arab raiders in the seventh century. Refusing to deny Christ, they were shot with arrows.

• Neophytos the Recluse

  Venerable, Νεόφυτος ο Έγκλειστος

  Neophytos was born in Cyprus in the twelfth century and, after years of monastic life, carved a cell for himself in a cliff near Paphos, the Enkleistra, where he lived in seclusion. Disciples gathered around him and a monastery grew up at the site.

• Sabbas the Goth

  Martyr, Σάββας ο Γότθος

  Sabbas was a Goth living in the lands north of the Danube who served as a reader in the Christian community there. When the Gothic chieftain Athanaric persecuted the Christians, Sabbas openly refused to eat food offered to idols and was arrested.
