Abo of Tbilisi

Holy Martyr Abo the Perfumer, patron of Tbilisi.

St. Abo was an Arab perfumer from Baghdad who came to Georgia in the eighth century and, drawn by the faith of the people, was baptized. He preached Christ openly in Tbilisi under Muslim rule and was beheaded in 786.

He is honored as a patron of Tbilisi and is commemorated on January 8.

On the New Calendar, Abo of Tbilisi is commemorated on January 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 21 of the civil calendar.
