George the Chozebite

Venerable George of Chozeba.

St. George the Chozebite was born on the island of Cyprus and became a monk of the monastery of Choziba, in the wild gorge on the road between Jerusalem and Jericho. Living in the seventh century, he embraced great austerity, humility, and unceasing prayer, and in time guided the brotherhood as a spiritual father.

His life, recorded by his disciple, preserves the memory of a gentle and severe ascetic in the tradition of the desert fathers of Palestine. He is commemorated on January 8.

On the New Calendar, George the Chozebite is commemorated on January 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 21 of the civil calendar.
