Abramios the Recluse and Mary

Venerable Abramios the Recluse of Edessa and his niece Mary.

Abramios fled his wedding to become a hermit near Edessa, and was later sent by the bishop to convert a pagan village, which he won by his patience. His orphaned niece Mary lived beside him in asceticism from childhood.

When Mary fell into sin and fled to a life of shame, Abramios sought her out disguised as a soldier and brought her back to repentance; both reposed in peace in the fourth century, and Saint Ephraim wrote their life.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Abramios the Recluse and Mary is commemorated on October 29. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 11 of the civil calendar.
