Timothy of Esphigmenou

Holy New Monk-Martyr Timothy of Esphigmenou Monastery, beheaded at Adrianople in 1820.

Timothy, born Triantaphyllos in Thrace, had once accepted Islam under pressure with his wife. Repenting, he went to Mount Athos and became a monk at Esphigmenou, and after preparation by prayer and fasting he returned to Adrianople to confess Christ publicly.

He was beheaded there in 1820, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

On the New Calendar, Timothy of Esphigmenou is commemorated on October 29. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 11 of the civil calendar.
