Saint John Maximovitch, Metropolitan of Tobolsk and all Siberia, missionary and wonderworker.
Saint John was born in 1651 near Nezhin in Ukraine, became a monk of the Kiev Caves and served as archbishop of Chernigov before being sent to Tobolsk in Siberia in 1711. There he sent missionaries to the native peoples and to China, wrote spiritual works and cared generously for the poor.
He reposed in 1715 and was glorified in 1916. Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco was his descendant and took his name.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, John of Tobolsk is commemorated on June 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 23 of the civil calendar.
