Nonnus of Heliopolis

Saint Nonnus, Bishop of Heliopolis, who converted and baptized Saint Pelagia.

Saint Nonnus was a monk of Tabenna who was made bishop of Heliopolis, and later of Edessa, in the fifth century. He is remembered chiefly for his preaching at Antioch, which brought the famous actress Pelagia to repentance.

He baptized her, and she went on to live as an ascetic on the Mount of Olives. Nonnus reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Nonnus of Heliopolis is commemorated on November 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 23 of the civil calendar.
