Orestes the Physician

Holy Martyr Orestes of Tyana in Cappadocia, a physician who suffered under Diocletian.

Saint Orestes was a physician of Tyana in Cappadocia during the persecution of Diocletian. Arrested for his faith, he refused to sacrifice to the idols and was subjected to severe tortures.

Tradition relates that he was finally tied to a wild horse and dragged to death. His name remains in use as a Greek baptismal name.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Orestes the Physician is commemorated on November 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 23 of the civil calendar.
