Sabbas Stratelates

Holy Martyr Sabbas the General, a Goth by birth, drowned in the Tiber with seventy soldiers.

Sabbas was a Goth who rose to the rank of military commander at Rome under the emperor Aurelian. A Christian, he visited and cared for the imprisoned confessors, and when denounced he laid aside his belt of office and declared his faith.

Seventy soldiers, seeing the wonders wrought during his tortures, believed and were beheaded; Sabbas himself was drowned in the Tiber in 272.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Sabbas Stratelates is commemorated on April 24. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 7 of the civil calendar.
