Evanthia the Righteous

Venerable Evanthia, righteous woman commemorated at the opening of the Church year.

The venerable Evanthia is listed in the Greek Synaxarion on September 1 among the righteous who reposed in peace. Little is recorded of her life beyond her name, which means a fair flowering, and the tradition that she lived in holiness and prayer.

Her memory is kept especially in Greece, where Evanthia remains a living baptismal name and this day is celebrated as her name day.
