Meletios the New of Myoupolis

Venerable Meletios the New, ascetic of Mount Myoupolis in Boeotia.

St. Meletios the New was born in Cappadocia in the eleventh century and came as a young man to Greece, where he embraced the monastic life. He settled on Mount Myoupolis near Thebes, in the region of Kithairon, and founded a monastery that drew many disciples.

He was known for his foolishness for Christ, his plain preaching, and his charity toward the poor, and was honored by emperors of his day. He reposed in peace in the early twelfth century and is commemorated on September 1.
